Mohun Bagan Banned from AFC competitions
Updated: Dec 23, 2025

Indian football recently faced a huge setback when the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) suspended one of its most famous clubs, Mohun Bagan FC. The suspension happened after the team decided not to travel to Iran for an away match against Sepahan SC in an AFC competition. Mohun Bagan officials explained that the decision was taken because of concerns about the safety of the players and the support staff. They believed that the situation could put their team at risk because of the lack of security assurances and medical insurance coverage
However, the AFC has very tight rules when it comes to international tournaments. According to these rules, teams are expected to play all scheduled matches unless they receive special permission from the AFC. Since Mohun Bagan did not play the match, AFC took strong disciplinary action. The club has been banned from participating in all AFC competitions until the 2027–28 season. Above all, Mohun Bagan must also pay a heavy fine of nearly $100,000.
This punishment is one of the harshest ever given to an Indian football club. It has deeply disappointed fans and players alike. The ban is a major blow not only to Mohun Bagan but also to Indian football, as it affects the country’s reputation and chances to grow on the international stage.
