Real Madrid’s title ambitions suffered a major blow at the Bernabéu as they were held to a frustrating 1–1 draw by a resilient Girona. Despite dominating with 22 shots and an Expected Goals (xG) of 2.15, Madrid struggled to find the clinical edge. Federico Valverde provided a moment of brilliance in the 51st minute with a long-range strike to put the hosts ahead. However, Girona, who maintained a disciplined low block for much of the game, struck back in the 62nd minute through Thomas Lemar. Madrid pushed for a winner late on, with Vinícius Júnior, but Paulo Gazzaniga was the hero for Girona, making 7 saves. Statistically, Madrid’s inability to convert big chances was the story of the night, as they missed three clear-cut opportunities in the final twenty minutes. The draw allowed Barcelona to extend their lead to 9 points by the end of the weekend.
