India withdraws from the FIFA ASEAN Cup

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has officially withdrawn India from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 to focus on a historic international friendly against five-time World Cup winners Brazil. India had been invited as a guest team and was placed in Division 1, Group A alongside Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. However, the tournament schedule created a major clash, with the Division 1 final scheduled for October 3, the same day India is set to play Brazil at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium. The AIFF initially considered sending two different squads to participate in both matches, but FIFA rejected the proposal because its regulations limit teams to a maximum of four matches during a single international window.
Consequently, the federation opted to fully pull out of the competition, sparking heavy criticism from domestic football veterans who argued that competitive regional fixtures are far more beneficial for the national team's long-term development than a costly, singular exhibition spectacle
