The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) began on December 21, 2025, with the host nation Morocco facing Comoros at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. The match ended in a 2–0 victory for Morocco. The first half of the game ended 0–0 as Comoros maintained a defensive structure that limited Morocco to three shots on target. However, Morocco broke the deadlock in the 55th minute of the second half. Brahim Diaz scored the opening goal from close range following a pass into the penalty area by Noussair Mazraoui.
Morocco doubled their lead later in the half when Ayoub El Kaabi scored with an overhead kick. Morocco finished with 68% possession and 19 total shots. Comoros managed 4 shots in total, with only 1 being on target. The Moroccan defense, led by Achraf Hakimi, successfully prevented Comoros from creating any "big chances" during the 90 minutes. There were 12 fouls committed by Morocco and 18 by Comoros. The referee issued three yellow cards in total. This win gave Morocco 3 points and put them at the top of Group A. The game was played in front of a capacity crowd, and it marked the first time Morocco had won an AFCON opening match since 2019. This match officially started the 24-team tournament which is scheduled to conclude in January 2026.
