Lionel Messi, accompanied by global football stars Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul, visited India in what was expected to be a landmark moment for Indian football.
Over the course of a 3 days, the trio toured major cities including Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi, drawing massive crowds and a a lot of attention to the sport.
Historic stadiums were filled with fans, young aspiring footballers, and celebrities eager to witness the presence of three world class players. The tour was widely promoted as an inspirational opportunity for Indian football and its growing fanbase.
However, as the visit progressed, dissatisfaction began to grow among supporters. Many fans felt that Indian football was repeatedly overshadowed as the focus shifted away from the sport itself at each venue. The situation reached its peak in Mumbai, where an unexpected moment briefly reignited hope among fans. Indian football icon Sunil Chhetri appeared on the pitch alongside Messi and his teammates, drawing loud cheers from the crowd. Yet the excitement was short-lived, as repeated appearances by government officials and prominent celebrities redirected attention away from the game.
Tensions further escalated toward the end of the event when speeches focused on Project Mahadeva, a Maharashtra government initiative aimed at scouting and promoting local football talent. While the project’s intent was positive, many fans expressed frustration that Messi’s visit was being used as a platform to promote a government program rather than to celebrate football. The event concluded with cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar being ceremonially honoured, a moment that, according to many football supporters, once again shifted the spotlight away from Indian football during what was meant to be its biggest occasion.
As the tour came to an end, a significant section of Indian football fans voiced their disappointment, feeling that a rare and historic opportunity had been mismanaged. While Messi’s presence brought global attention to India, many supporters believe the visit ultimately highlighted the ongoing struggle for football to receive the focus and respect it deserves in the country.
